Why defining the Biomedical Informatics Field is so important.

Here you can see my contribution to the Conference of the Federation for Medical Informatics (MIE2012) that took place in Pisa (Italy) last August in a Workshop about the definition of Biomedical Informatics field and its implications:

Although in the last few years different definitions of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) have been proposed, it is still an open issue of current interest for several reasons. In 2011, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) defined BMI as the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health. In the same way, the INBIOMEDvision initiative that I'm involved, is analyzing the need and significance of defining the Biomedical Informatics field from a European perspective and the potential implications for research, health care systems and society.
